Royal Theatre in Hue Restored

Duyet Thi Duong, the oldest theatre in Vietnam, has been restored and is now operating again to bring back culture and art to Hue.

The royal theatre was constructed in 1826 under the reign of King Ming Mang in which it became the primary performing art centre of the Nguyen Dynasty. But time and several wars caused gradual aging and destruction of the edifice.

The Hue Monuments Conservation Centre is in charge of bringing back the old theatre to its former glory. So far, it has brought back art performances and opened an exhibition section which displays traditional art costumes, masks and other accessories. According to Director Phan Thanh Hai, the centre has also reintroduced royal dances, music and opera.
