Mekong Delta: Investment Magnet

In order to promote investment in Ho Chi Minh City, the Dutch-invested, Netherlands-backed company De Heus LLC Vietnam will build an additional animal feed plant and an aqua-culture research center in Vinh Long Province. The former will cost $15 million while the latter is worth $3 million.

In line with its investment plans, some of the company’s projects have already been in operation for quite some time. A $12-million aqua-feed plant in the same province has already been running efficiently, while a brewery in Mekong Delta operated in 2009. General Director of the Japanese-invested Sapporo Vietnam beer-maker company Hirofumi Kishi said that Mekong Delta was chosen because of several factors: large population; unique culinary culture; agricultural and aquatic products; cheap land fees; low-cost labor; improved traffic infrastructure and upgraded waterways, all of which make up for a huge potential for a beer industry. Sapporo Vietnam has a starting capacity of 40 million litres per year and a maximum of 150 million litres of the same period. Two years after it first started, the Long An-based beer can now be bought in 4,000 stores all across the country.

Aside from this, Mekong Delta is also venturing into processing industries since the place is abundant in such products as rice, seafood and fruit. European investors are said to be also eyeing the region for investments in several sectors such as tourism real estate; food and beverage services; and hotels.

Naturally, the local government is supportive and determined in creating the best atmosphere in order for more investors to come in. Vice Chairman of the Can Tho City’s Peoples’ Committee Vo Thanh Thong has personally emphasized this in his speech to representatives of the 13 cities and provinces of the region.

In a short span of two years from 2011-2013 so far, Mekong Delta has already garnered 271 projects, a total of registered capital of $2.3 billion.
