Hue: ASEAN Clean Tourist City

The ASEAN Green Awards 2018 just named Hue “Clean Tourist City.” One hotel establishment in the imperial city is also among the awardees in the prestigious trophy.

Hue City earned the award for meeting all the criteria: Cleanliness; Environment and Waste Management; Green Space Around the City; Security and Health; Urban Safety; and Tourism Infrastructure.

The Pilgrimage Village Boutique Resort and Spa is a hotel in the city which also received the important ASEAN Green Award 2018 for being a “green hotel” which “promotes environmental friendliness and energy conservation” and for fulfilling the following elements: Environmental Plan; Green Product; Human Resources; and Environmental Management.

Deputy Director of the Tourism Department of Thua Thien – Hue Province Nguyen Van Phuc stated that the number of (hotel) awardees in the provinces decreased from 10 to five in the last few years because of new and tighter requirements.

ASEAN started creating “Green Standards” for its member countries’ cities and hotels in 2006 and implemented it in 2008. The ASEAN Clean Tourist City Standard aims to equip its member countries with the necessary tools to boost the quality of its tourism. The ASEAN Green Hotel Standard is directed at enhancing the environmental-friendly and energy conservation ability of such establishments.   

Vietnam joined the ASEAN in 1995. The Association of Southeast Asian Nations was established in 1967 and has 10 member states: Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.  

Two other Vietnamese cities also received the same award for Clean Tourist City, the old town of Hoi An and the city of villas, Da Lat, while other Vietnamese hotels which were given the ASEAN Green Award 2018 are Flamingo Dai Lai Resort in Northern Vinh Phuc Province, Four Seasons The Nam Hai Resort in Central Quang Nam Province, Ho Tram Beach Boutique Resort and Spa, and Six Senses Con Dao Resort in Southern Ba Ria – Vung Tau Province. The awarding ceremony will be held in Chiang Mai, Thailand on January 2018.
