Con Dao Islands has always been known for its impeccable beaches and rich history. In fact, it was named as one of the most mysterious islands in the world in 2011 by the United States magazine Travel and Leisure and identified as Vietnam’s first sea Ramsar site in 2014.
Con Dao Islands is located 97 nautical miles off Vung Tau. Con Lon is its biggest archipelago, while Bay Canh is the second largest. At Con Lon, Nhat Beach is famous for its immaculate state. It is also accessible at only six kilometres from the town. It is only visible for a few hours a day, so tourists always make sure they get to get a glimpse of the mysterious beach. At Bay Canh, tourists are treated to watching sea turtles lay eggs (between July and October) or dive into the coral reefs for only VND500,000 ($22.50).
Historically significant as well, Con Dao Islands has the Hang Duong Cemetery where lies many local heroes who fought for the country’s freedom during the war. Vo Thi Sau, Le Hong Phong, Nguyen An Ninh and 2,000 other war martyrs are just some of the war legends that can be found here. There is also a prison used during the Vietnam War and is now being preserved for the future generations.
For those who believe in feng shui, Nui Mot Pagoda is an ideal place to visit especially with its peaceful view of a magnificent mountain at the back and a captivating lotus swamp and sea in front. The Ong Dung primitive forest is perfect for the adventure seekers, just four kilometres from the main town and ten kilometres from the famous Dam Trau Beach. For those who love camping, Cape Shark offers a breathtaking sunrise and other exciting outdoor activities. Love Mount is also a must-visit because seen from a distance, the view looks like an embracing couple, perfect for picture-taking and holding memories in general.
Con Dao Market is also a tourist destination with its fresh and dried seafood which is available as early as 4:00 a.m. when fishermen begin their daily duties. Fresh seafood and other goods are sold at the port at the delight of visitors.
